Test imports to reveal traces of heavy metal
Toys. Toothpaste. Pet food. Recent headlines frequently focus on product recalls, often on imported items. How can your company ensure you are not on the headline roster? One way is to conduct regular, random tests for trace heavy metal contamination. A PIXE test is one such method of determining if your products have unanticipated metals in them. Inexpensive, with fast turnaround, the tests are like a pro-active CSI for product recall.
Nanomedicine: White paper study on test parameters
Nanomedicine is an estimated $906 billion market in the US, and projected to grow at 48% per year through 2009, according to a study by the Freedonia Group. Diagnosis and treatment at the molecular level, made possible through nano-technology, is fueling new approaches for diagnostic and treatment solutions in the healthcare sector. Never before accuracy is required to detect contaminants which can affect production capability and efficacy. Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) may improve outputs by detecting contaminants early – reducing wasted time and materials.
The Mystery of Mercury and Eyeglasses
“Can you help my son? He’s just a little boy, and
all of a sudden, he’s going blind.” A
mother’s plea to unravel the mystery of
her son’s oncoming blindness launched one of
our earliest cases. Her son had been playing on the
playground when his glasses fell to the
pavement. The frame broke apart when
stepped on. The boy’s eyes did not seem
damaged, and their doctor soldered the frame back together.
A few days later, the child’s sight began to fail. His mom
read that mercury poisoning could cause blindness, and
thought back to the soldered frames. Could they be the
culprit? She turned to us, and used trace
element analysis to rule out mercury as
the cause. Because of the tests, they
could rule out the element, and eventually uncovered the
disease causing his vision loss.
